CORINNA THE HIDDEN OASIS

Corinna… Our new favourite place in Tassie

Wait… Corinna..? Where the bloody hell is that? I know, I know, its not the first destination that pops up when you think of Tassie but it should be at the top of your list when you think of a remote rainforest oasis where it is impossible not to be immersed in nature.

Stairway to heaven - Lovers Falls, Corinna, Tasmania

Stairway to heaven - Lovers Falls, Corinna, Tasmania

We had heard of Corinna but didn’t really know what to expect. We knew it was a settlement on the banks of the Pieman River at the southern end of the Tarkine and that you had to catch a barge to get to it if you were travelling from south ($28 for a vehicle, $33 for vehicle and camper). Now that was cool, how many places do you have to catch a barge to?

We did a little research before going and didn’t find a lot online, thats probably because there is not much there now. The Corinna Wilderness team run the Tarkine Hotel, barge, campsites and the one or two bedroom retreats that you can book and stay in.

Riverside Camp site - Corinna Tasmania, whats not to love

Riverside Camp site - Corinna Tasmania, whats not to love

You are at one with the wilderness here. No phone reception, wifi, tv, shops. But what you will find is amazing secluded camp sites along the Pieman River with their own decks for your tent or sitting on. ($40 a night, non powered)  No campfires at the sites but a large sheltered fire and bbq can be found at the communal camp area.

There are clean toilet and shower facilities in the back of the Hotel (flushing toilets and $2 for 3 minutes in the shower) for you to use when camping.

A 30 second walk from the camping area is the Hotel,  where there is cold beer and toasty fires. Grab some dinner in the Tannin restaurant if you want to be treated to a restaurant quality meal. We chose the Pumpkin risotto and Lamb Shanks and it was honestly one of the best meals we have had! (We do not believe the restaurant is open in winter months). You will need to pack all your meals for your stay as we mentioned, there is NOTHING close by.

There is a real feel to this place, its something pretty special and that is why it was our favourite part of our recent travels in TAS. It is at it’s most beautiful at dusk and dawn when the light is soft on the water. It rained very heavily on the Wednesday morning for a few solid hours, that would normally be a worry for people in a canvas camper, but we loved it, taking shelter under our awning on our campsite deck. Once the rain cleared we went on one of the many bush walks available along the river. Click HERE to see the full activities map.

Boat ride into the falls

There are 2 guided boat cruises to choose from. The main one being the Pieman River Cruise on the Arcadia II. This cruise leaves at 10am, takes you to Pieman Heads, where the river meets the ocean, Lovers Falls and back again to return at around 2pm. Cost is $95 pp and includes lunch.

As we had little Teddie with us we chose the shorter one hour Sweetwater cruise on a smaller open boat that is $35 pp and is from 3-4pm. It took us to the amazing Lovers Falls, the Savage River where there is a Shipwreck and had a good chat with the tour guide, learning that there are male & female Huon pine trees! Useless but cool facts!

Pieman River Cruise

If guided tours aren’t your thing, then you can hire a range of kayaks and canoes from the Hotel or take your own boat!

Corinna - 10/10

If you love camping and Tasmania you have to go here, it’s an experience you will not forget. Like we mentioned it has a special feel about it. It would be perfect for a romantic getaway in the cottages over winter.

So thats it, our first little not perfect blog! But hey we are new to this. Thank you so much for taking the time to read it and stay tuned for more to come! Wally & Rochelle :)
